Division of Traffic Engineering
New Development And Construction

This section of Traffic Engineering is split into five distinct areas:

  • Right-of-Way Blockage Permits – Contractors, utility companies, and on occasion private citizens find it necessary to have to block a sidewalk, lane, or street. It is our job to make sure the blockage is performed safely with as much advance notice to the general public as possible.

  • Street Lights – Public street lighting is a joint effort between the local government and local, electric utility companies serving Fayette County. Traffic Engineering designs and authorized lighting to be installed that meets Illumination Engineering Society (IES) Guidelines. The local government leases the street lights from the electric companies, who maintains them. They are responsible for replacing street lights that have been hit and for making sure they are on at night and off during the day.

  • Development and Site Plan Review/Approval – All public and private developments within Fayette County are reviewed by staff. We pay special attention to access to and within the development, parking lot and loading area design, street geometrics (cross sections, turning radii, etc.), directional markings, and intersections.

  • Traffic Signal and Traffic Control Device Construction – Once it is determined by an approved engineering study that a particular traffic control device will be installed our staff works with the contractor and/or provides technical assistance as needed. Traffic control devices may be constructed by State/Local Government or Private Developers who’s development activity causes need for the device(s).

  • Fiber Optic Program – The division is mid way through a 10 year installation plan to install fiber optic cable along major corridors within Lexington. The benefits to the community include better communication with traffic signals allowing engineers/technicians to modify timing for predictable and not so predictable traffic patterns.
