our community has made the commitment to invest in our trees. Tree City USA is sponsored by The National Arbor Day
Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, and provides
direction, technical assistance, public attention, and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs.
- Tree Board: This is a group of 15 concerned citizens appointed by the Mayor. Meetings are held on the second
Wednesday of each month and are open to the public.

- Hazard Street Tree (Cost-Share) Program -- This program is available to owner-occupied residential
property owners who own a dead and/or declining street tree. The program assists property owners with
their responsibility to properly maintain street trees. It is administered on a first come, first
served basis with a limited amount of funding. Call us at 258-3451 for more information or
e-mail us.
- Reforest the Bluegrass - An annual tree planting event
for volunteers funded by both public and private sponsors. Reforest the Bluegrass is a storm water and urban
forestry management program designed to improve water and air quality, wildlife habitat and aesthetics.
- Operation Rescue Tannenbaum - A program that accepts live Christmas trees from citizens, following the holidays,
to be planted in public green spaces. Since 1996, the program has received more than 250 tree donations from the community.
If you are interested in making a donation of a live Christmas tree, please call LexCall at 3-1-1 or 425-2255 or
e-mail us.
- Fayette County Champion Tree Program – Designed to promote tree care by identifying
trees that are large for their species. The program began in 1985.
Although the tree must be growing in Fayette County, the nominator and owner
can live anywhere. Owners of trees listed in the register are awarded a certificate.
Scoring is based strictly on three measurements of size. Each tree is compared
only with other trees of the same species.
