The Lexington Senior Citizens Center is a multi-purpose community focal point for services to persons 60 and older
in Fayette County. Hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Center was
designed to provide a single entry point for many services. Accordingly, it houses several agencies which
serve older persons. These agencies each have their own budgets and funding sources, their own staff and parent organization.

Employment Services
The Hire Older Workers program is part of the Mayor's Office of Career Resource and Training. The program places
low-income persons over the age of 55 in jobs with the private sector. It can also provide some classroom training
and on-the-job training contracts. These include full-time permanent to temporary positions. The former Careers
After 60 Program is also housed in this agency. The Senior Community Services Employment Program is part of the
Urban League. Clients are low-income and over 55. Participants are placed in public sector positions where they
work 20 hours a week for a subsidy provided by Title V of the Older Americans Act. The goal is to move participants
to non-subsidized positions.
Nursing Home Ombudsman
The Nursing Home Ombudsman Agency of Bluegrass
is the designated sub-state ombudsman for nursing home residents in a 17 county area. 32 local ombudsmen work with
nursing home residents and staff to resolve conflicts and problems on the residents' behalf.
Volunteering
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is a unit of the federally funded program of
the same name, and operates under the Community Action Council. Matching funds are received from the Department
of Social Services.
Adult Day Care
The Center for Creative Living is an adult day health care program under the auspices
of the Fayette County Health Department. It offers skilled nursing, self-care training, counseling, social services,
physical and speech therapy, entertainment and recreation. It is designed to help people remain independent in their
homes and to provide respite for family caregivers. Some clients are served under the Title XIX Medicaid Waiver,
a few are private pay and the remainder pay the Health Department on a sliding fee scale.
Bluegrass Community Action Council operates a congregate nutrition site at the Center. One of three sites in the
county, hot noon meals are provided to persons over 60. They also provide home delivered meals through both the
Title III program and the State Home Care program. All meals are catered. There is a donation request for Title
III meals. HomeCare meals are billed on a sliding fee scale.
Nutrition
The Meals on Wheels Program supplies volunteer-delivered meals to home bound persons. The receptionist housed at
the Center takes requests for meals and bills clients. A fee is charged for these meals.
Classes and Meetings
In addition to these programs there are a number of organizations who use the facilities for meetings or classes,
including the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, General Telephone Retirees, the Disabled American
Veterans, the Silent Seniors, the University of Kentucky Donovan Program, Lexington Community College and AARP.
The University sponsors a dulcimer class and Great Decisions. Lexington Community College sponsors a Current
Events and American History class. AARP has volunteers to help with income taxes and drivers re-training.
The Division of Parks and Recreation provides a number of recreation classes including art, china painting,
crafts, exercise, line dancing, fitness program and autobiography class. The Carnegie Center provides a Family
Stories writing class. The Center also offers square dancing, a Senior Band, bridge, bingo, assistance with
understanding medical bills (MMAP).
