DOWNTOWN COLLECTION

Garbage and bulky items are collected every night except Sundays.

The area listed below is known as the downtown collection area. This area applies to retail stores, hotels, restaurants, office buildings and houses in the center of the city. Residential and non-residential establishments within the downtown collection area which do not use dumpsters should place their receptacles or roll carts on the sidewalk at the curb line no earlier than 5:00 p.m. At all other times, containers shall be removed from the sidewalks and shall not be permitted to remain there during daylight hours.

Recycling collection days in the downtown area are Tuesdays and Fridays.

The following areas are considered to be in the downtown area:

Main Street from Jefferson Street to Ransom Avenue
Vine Street and High Street from Broadway to Rose Street
Short Street from Felix Street to Deweese Street
Second Street from Broadway to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
Church Street
Barr Street
Water Street
Mechanic Street
Pleasant Street
Broadway from Second Street to High Street
Mill Street
Upper Street and Limestone Street from Third Street to High Street
Market Street
Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard from Main Street to Third Street
DeWeese Street from Main Street to Second Street
Felix Street
Esplanade
Cheapside

Downtown Waste Collection Pilot Program

Beginning Monday May 21, 2001 the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Division of Solid Waste will expand downtown waste collection to two shifts to reduce the amount of time that Herbie containers are left on the curb, make the service more convenient and expand the recycling activities.

Collection Times

The evening shift will begin at 2 P.M.
The morning shift will begin at 2 A.M.

Herbie Placement Rules

Businesses that have adequate space (off the sidewalk) for their Herbie containers must remove them from the sidewalk shortly after collection.

Businesses that do not have adequate space to store Herbies must use plastic bags for their waste. Restaurants and other businesses with wet waste and heavy materials such as glass must use heavy-duty 3 mil plastic bags. Recycling

Cardboard boxes must be flattened, bundled and tied. They cannot be used as containers. Please remove all liners and packing material because they will be collected separately and recycled. It will be collected daily on both shifts.

Businesses that have space for containers can get blue recycling carts designated for cardboard only from the Division of Solid Waste free of charge. Call LexCall at 425-2255 or send email.

Other Waste

Unacceptable material includes heavy materials, dirt, pallets, copiers, auto parts and construction debris such as roofing, siding, bricks etc. Glass windowpanes, fluorescent bulbs and used medical needles must be placed in a secure can or bucket with a lid.

Future Services

During this pilot program we may modify certain aspects of the service as we learn more about the needs of downtown businesses. In the near future a vacuum service will be introduced for downtown sidewalks to help make our downtown as clean as possible. The Division of Solid Waste also plans to offer recycling collection for other commodities within the next year.
