The following links provide a guide to the resources available on LFUCG.com regarding floodplains and flood protection.
Be Prepared
There are many ways to prepare your family and your property for the possibility of flooding.
First, you should familiarize yourself with the
warning systems
that are in place.
The
Department of Emergency and Environmental Management also provides several guides for
emergency preparedness, including ways your family can
prepare for such an emergency. The
Emergency Operations Plan for
Fayette County outlines the local hazards and the plans the LFUCG has in place to minimize damage
from several possible disasters, including flooding.
There are also many measures you can take to
protect your property, such as retrofitting, redirecting stormwater, and purchasing insurance -- find out
more about becoming disaster resistant

Get Informed
Did you know that standard property insurance does not cover flood damage? It pays to be informed! Separate flood
insurance is available in Lexington through the National Flood Insurance Program -- find out more
here.
The Lexington Fayette Urban County
Government actively works to protect the land and property within the floodplain.
Article 19 of the
Zoning Ordinance describes the specific regulations
put in place to protect the floodplain.
The
Environmental & Green Infrastructure Element
of the Comprehensive Plan outlines how the floodplain
has been incorporated into the preserved Greenways throughout Lexington.
Stormwater Management
also plays an important role in protecting
the community from flooding; this website provides information on permits, stormwater manuals, property
flooding and real-time stream flow data.

New materials about floodplains and flood protection, including the latest Floodplain Management Plan, have been
placed in the reference section of the
Central Library.
Also held in the library is the
latest Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM), which can tell you where your property lies in relation to the floodplain, and
whether you are required to purchase insurance. The FIRM is also available for inspection in the
Division of Planning at 101 East Vine Street, on the 7th floor.
