![]() The East End, a long-time Lexington neighborhood, has been undergoing considerable renewal and attracting new interest over the past few years. Hundreds of new homes are planned or have been built as part of the redevelopment of a public housing complex in the core of East End. Revival of the Lyric Theater, repurposing of the Charles Young Community Center, construction of the William Wells Brown Community School, plans for the Isaac Murphy Memorial Garden, and construction of new roads and connections are among other exciting visions and opportunities for the East End. The East End Small Area Plan, funded by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, will identify strategies and implementation tasks that will guide and direct development decisions for the area. EHI Consultants, led by Ed Holmes, a former East End resident, will conduct the small area plan. A steering committee of East End residents and other neighborhood representatives will review and comment on consultant recommendations as well as provide direction. The steering committee will also disseminate information to the larger East End population. The East End Small Area Plan should provide direction for efforts at revitalization of existing residential and commercial uses, including re-designation of uses where appropriate; appropriate adaptive reuse and redevelopment efforts; affordable and market rate housing; increased employment and residential opportunities; accommodation of places of worship and other social institutions; appropriate urban design; and recognition of historic resources and other special interests of the area.
