Board Member Elections Employee Representatives Two employee representatives of each division are elected by the active members of the respective divisions and serve for a term of two years. One of the active members is elected in even-numbered years; and the other active member is elected in odd-numbered years. In the event of a vacancy of an elected member, the Board fills the vacancy by appointment until the next regular election. Employee Election Process Nominations for candidates are due on or before August 10th and are filed with the Chiefs of the respective divisions. The nominations must be in writing and signed by not less than twenty-five percent (25%) of the members of each division. Within five days after the close of nominations, the Chiefs of the respective department certify in writing the names of those placed in nomination. The elections occur on the first Wednesday after the first Tuesday in September. The elections begin at 12 noon on Wednesday and continue for a forty-eight hour period. The election is under the supervision of the commanding officers of each division, who report the results with the ballots in a sealed envelope to the Mayor. The Mayor certifies the vote to the Board on the following Wednesday. On the third Wednesday after the first Tuesday in September the candidate receiving the most votes assumes office. Retiree Representatives Retiree representatives are elected by retired members and serve two year terms. One retiree representative must be a retiree from the Division of Fire and Emergency Services and other must be a retiree from the Division of Police. Retired members can submit the names of at least three (3) nominees from their divisions to the Board no later than August 15th for the term beginning October 15th. Retiree Election Process The administrative staff of the Board prepares an official ballot which is distributed to all retired fund members by mail to their last known address. Votes are tabulated by a committee of three Board members appointed by the chairman. The tabulating committee reports the election results in writing to the Board. The retiree from either division receiving the most votes serves a two year term. In the event of a vacancy of an elected retired fund member of the Board, the retiree receiving the next largest number of votes from the department for which the vacancy exists fills the vacancy until the next election. |
