Lexington Sister Cities Commission
Shizunai, Japan

Lexington officially twinned with Shizunai, Japan in 1988 as part of the festivities during the Sister Cities International Conference in Lexington. Shizunai is the “Heart of the Horse Industry” in Japan. There are many thoroughbred farms surrounding the city with Japan’s top stallions standing in this area. Shizunai provides Japan with its largest sales pavilion for auctioning horses. Shizunai is located on Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan, and has a population of 26,000. If you visit Shizunai, you will enjoy its scenic beauty of mountains, sea, rolling meadows and lakes. It is an area blessed with natural beauty, located at the foot of the Hikada mountain range and facing the Pacific Ocean. In the spring when the cherry blossoms are in bloom, it is breathtaking.
