A fire recruit has just 22 weeks to obtain certifications as a National Registry EMT; International Fire Service Accreditation Committee (IFSAC) Firefighter I and II; NFPA Standards for Firefighter Safety & Survival, Firefighter Rescue, and Wildland Firefighting; Weather Spotter and American Automobile Association (AAA) Car Seat Technician. Each recruit has well over the required minimum 400 hours of specific and general fire service training, and becomes a valuable asset to the crews they join and to the community.
Recruits are assigned to a training company - one of two engines, an aerial, and occasionally an EC (ambulance) Unit - for the duration of the academy. there they learn how to apply the lessons learned in the classroom to more realistic situations confronting Lexington-Fayette County firefighters everyday.
After graduation, recruits have a series of monthly written tests, comprehensive written and skill tests at six months and a year, and are considered probationary employees until successfully completeing their first year on the job.
