PHYSICAL AGILITY EXAMINATION INFORMATION...

The Physical Agility Test will be given only to those individuals with composite passing scores of at least 70% on the written exam. Those progressing to the physical agility test must pass the examination in order to be considered for further testing. The Physical Agility Test consists of six different evolutions or events. Three events will be considered Pass/Fail. They are the Ladder Handling, Simulated Window Escape, and Simulated Halyard Pull in which two attempts will be allowed. The other three events to include Hose Advance, Rope Pull, and High-Rise/Hose Pull must be completed within allotted time for each event. If the required time in any of these events is not satisfied, the candidate will be eliminated from the testing process.

TESTING EVENTS AND VIDEO CLIPS...
  1. Ladder Handling - tests a candidate's effectiveness, strength and to a lesser degree, one's coordination.

Standard - Pass/Fail test, two attempts

Execution - Each candidate removes a twenty-four (24) foot extension ladder from frame, carries the ladder twenty-five (25) feet and places it on the ground at a designated spot.

The candidate stands up straight, then squats down, lifts ladder, returns the twenty-five (25) feet and places the ladder on the frame at a height of seventy-two and one-half (72.5) inches.

At no time shall the ladder touch the ground except in the designated spot during the exercise.

  2. Simulated Halyard Pull - tests a candidate's balance, coordination, and upper body strength.

Standard - Pass/Fail test, two attempts

Execution - Each candidate, by means of a rope and pulley system shall, raise a 45 lb. weight to a height of twelve (12) ft. and lower it in a controlled manner.

Letting the weight free fall to the ground shall constitute a failure.

  3. Simulated Window Escape - tests a candidate's agility and coordination.

Standard - Pass/Fail test, two attempts

Execution - Each candidate shall demonstrate their ability to climb through a 36" x 36" vertical opening that is 44" above ground level.

The sides of the prop shall not be used as a step.

  4. Hose Advance - tests a candidate's lower body strength and effectiveness.
Standard - 18.36 seconds, one attempt

Execution - Each candidate must pull a one and three quarter (1 ¾) inch hose the designated distance of one hundred and fifty (150) feet.

The hose, full of water under pressure, will be lying in a straight line from the truck.

At the start line, the candidate will grasp the nozzle and begin dragging the hose the required distance to the finish line.

  5. Rope Pull - tests a candidate's arm strength and effectiveness.

Standard - 55.52 seconds, one attempt

Execution - Each candidate pulls a fifty (50) pound weight (hose bundle on sled) the designated distance of two hundred (200) feet as fast as possible.

Candidate must not step out of marked area during the execution of this event. (Stepping out of the area will result in disqualification.)

  6. High-Rise/Hose Pull - tests a candidate's strength, endurance and effectiveness.

Standard - 167.44 seconds, one attempt

Execution - Each candidate will be required to wear a Self-contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), at an average weight of 24 lbs., while carrying a fifty (50) foot section of one and three quarter (1 ¾) inch hose, with nozzle attached to the top floor of the training tower.

There he/she will deposit the hose at one of the hose pull stations and proceed to pull one hundred (100) feet of one and three-quarter (1 ¾) inch hose to the top of the tower.

Once this is completed, the candidate picks up his/her fifty (50) foot section of hose for the return trip down to the start/finish line. Please exercise caution throughout this event.

IF AN APPLICANT REQUIRES A SECOND ATTEMPT AT AN EVOLUTION/EVENT, HE/SHE SHALL COMPLETE THE ATTEMPT WITH THE TEST GROUP THEY ARE ASSIGNED WITH PRIOR TO MOVING TO THE NEXT EVOLUTION/EVENT.

NOTE:

* THIS IS A PASS/FAIL EXAMINATION. ALL EVENTS MUST BE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED. INABILITY TO COMPLETE ANY ONE (1) EVENT WILL RESULT IN A FAILURE FOR THE PHYSICAL AGILITY EXAM; HOWEVER CANDIDATES WILL HAVE ONE (1) OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE A PHYSICAL AGILITY RETEST EITHER DURING THE SAME OR NEXT CONSECTIVE RECRUITMENT CYCLE. IF APPLICABLE, RETEST INFORMATION WILL BE PROVIDED TO ANY CANDIDATES AT THE TIME OF THEIR INITIALLY FAILED PT EXAM. IF THE CANDIDATE FAILS THE SECOND PHYSICAL AGILITY EXAMINATION ATTEMPT, S/HE WILL BE ELIMINATED FROM THE ENTIRE CURRENT TESTING CYCLE AND WILL HAVE TO REAPPLY DURING THE NEXT TESTING CYCLE BEGINNING WITH SUBMITTING A NEW POSITION INTEREST FORM.

Pre-background Process:

Those applicants who received a passing score as a result of the pass/fail written test and successful completion of the physical agility test will complete a pre-background interview immediately following the PT exam. Those successfully completing this phase will be scheduled for an oral examination. Applicants must bring a list of five (5) character references (preferably neighbors), and five (5) previous employers with current phone numbers and addresses to the pre-background interview. The blank reference forms will be provided at the written examination.
