The Division of Planning provides the overall growth management guidelines to manage growth and development.
Planning services: To pick up an application, zoning map or learn about zone changes and subdivision plans in your neighborhood, call or visit Planning. You can also learn the floodplain status of an area and obtain information about the National Flood Insurance Program by
visiting this division.
Long range planning: To learn about future land use plans for your neighborhood or other parts of the city, whether a small area plan has been completed for your area, or the schedule of upcoming long range planning activities which may impact you,
contact Planning. Printed copies of the
Comprehensive Plan or land use maps are available for review or purchase. Other plans such as the Rural Land Management Plan, Infill and Redevelopment, the Newtown Pike Extension Corridor, and the Greenway Master Plan, are also available.
Transportation issues: Learn how certain streets are affected by traffic flow or if road projects will affect your neighborhood. Planning is also responsible for many aspects of highway and transit planning and the development of the long range and implementation transportation plans. They also address congestion management, planning for energy consumption, air quality, bikeways, pedestrian, and facilities for people with disabilities. Traffic counts on many of the roads in the area are also available.

Strategic planning: If you need
information on the rural service area land management plan; implementation of the urban service expansion area master plan; the greenspace program; Greenway Master Plan; infill/redevelopment; neighborhood conservation; bicycle/pedestrian
facilities; or the Newtown Pike Extension Corridor Plan; visit the Division of Planning.
Environmental planning: If you have questions about sinkholes, steep slopes, or other environmental issues impacting development, you can contact Planning for historical documentation of these issues and/or a field visit to determine the potential impact on the development.
Census data: To find out the population of specific areas of Lexington, call Planning at 258-3160 or visit www.census.gov.
Building or buying a house: You can pick up a copy of your plat, future land use requirements, and any zoning special design requirements in Planning.
Need a map? If you are interested in purchasing copies of urban or rural land use, zoning, property line, or topographical maps, call Planning.
Building plan denied? Variances and conditional uses from what the zone allows require approval from the Board of Adjustment. If your building permit has been refused, you can appeal your request by contacting the Board of Adjustment staff at 258-3160.

Meeting information: Copies of schedules and agendas for the Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment and Greeenspace Commission meetings, can all be obtained from Planning, including on the website.
Neighborhood associations: If you haven’t already, you may want to call in your neighborhood association information to 258-3260. By doing this you will receive information about planning issues in your neighborhood, council district information, and a listing in a database in case specific individuals need to contact your neighborhood association. A list and map of registered neighborhood associations can be found on Planning’s website.
