Frequently asked questions:

My container (Herbie, Rosie or Lenny) is broken. Can you fix it?
Yes, and if it can’t be fixed it will be replaced with another one. Call LexCall to report a broken container. The Division of Waste Management will try to fix it within 7 – 10 working days. Don’t leave your broken container at the curb, behind a fence, or in your garage; just set it where it can be seen from the street and the workers can find it.

My garbage container was not emptied on my service day; will you come back and empty it?
If you set your container on the curb the night before your collection day, it should get emptied. If, however, you are missed, please call LexCall any time after 1:30 p.m. on the day you should have received collection service or early the next day. Waste Management will go back and empty your container.

How do I report a pothole?
Call LexCall, or visit the LexCall website to report a pothole on Lexington’s streets. Potholes will be fixed within two working days, barring inclement weather.

Sewage is backing up in my home. Who can help?
If you have a sanitary sewer problem in your home, yard or sanitary sewer line, call LexCall to report the problem. Depending on the location of the problem, sanitary sewer crews will either fix the problem or advise you to contact a plumber. Crews are available 24 hours a day to respond to emergency sanitary sewer problems.

How do I dispose of an old appliance?
If you have Urban County Government garbage collection, the Division of Waste Management will pick up appliances by appointment and take them to a recycling center. Call LexCall at least 48 hours before collection day, to schedule an appliance pick up. If you have private garbage collection, drop the appliance off at no charge at Environmental Recycling, 3899 Winchester Road.

I want to put up a new fence; where do I start?
Permits are required for all fences and walls 24 inches and higher. Retaining walls three feet or over are required to have engineer-stamped plans and certification by an engineer after construction. Call the Division of Building Inspection, 258-3770, for additional details.

There is an abandoned vehicle on my street; whom do I call?
If an abandoned vehicle is left on a public street or roadway, the Division of Police will respond. Code Enforcement handles abandoned or junked vehicles on private property. Call LexCall to report abandoned vehicles on private property.

The house down the street is overtaken with high weeds; whom do I call?
Weeds are declared a nuisance according to City Ordinance when they exceed 12 inches in height. To report the nuisance, call LexCall and Code Enforcement will investigate.

A traffic signal is not working properly; how do I report it?
To report a malfunctioning traffic signal, call LexCall and the Division of Traffic Engineering will look into it as soon as possible. If the traffic signal is totally dark, this is an emergency so please report it as soon as possible to either LexCall at 425-2255 or the Division of Police, 258-3600.

Whom do I call if a street light bulb is out?
Kentucky Utilities is responsible for replacing bulbs in street lights. Please call them at 1-800-981-0600. If your area is served by Blue Grass Energy, call 885-4191.

How do I dispose of old paint?
The Division of Waste Management will pick up paint if it is properly prepared. The paint must be solidified by either pouring cat litter, sand or dirt in the can or by simply letting the paint dry in the can. Place the can on the curb on your collection day with the lid on loosely so workers can see that the paint is solidified. Paint hardening crystals are available at the LFUCG Recycling Center, 360 Thompson Rd. from 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. weekdays or 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. The Center is closed on holidays.
