Contractors: Contact Engineering for plan review, permit issuance and fee collection for sewer tap-ons.
Sump pump redirect: Many homes built in the 1960s-70s had a sump pump installed to take storm water away from the foundations and discharge it into the sanitary sewer system. The Sump Pump Redirect program removes the sump pump from the sanitary sewer system and discharges water into the storm drainage system, at no charge to the property owner. For more information, call LexCall at 3-1-1 or 425-2255.
Detention Basins/Retention Ponds: Basins and ponds help slow the flow of storm water during times of heavy flooding. Property owners are responsible for routine maintenance of these areas. The government repairs structural problems at detention basins and provides a 50-50 match program for owners of retention ponds to pay for repairs. For more details, call 258-3415.
Greenways: Greenways are linear corridors that support biodiversity, improve water quality, reduce flooding and provide space for recreation. Call 258-3478, for information and site locations of the Fayette County Greenways network.
Floodproofing: If your home floods from surface water runoff, you may be eligible for the Cooperative Floodproofing Program. Owner occupied single-family residences and duplexes may be reimbursed at 50 percent of the cost to make structural alterations that will keep water out of the home. Call 258-3410.
Floodplain advice: Maps prepared for the Federal Emergency Management Agency identify floodplains in Fayette County. You can call 258-3410 to find out if an identified floodplain is on your property.
Digging in right-of-way: Utilities and all other contractors are obligated to obtain a permit prior to initiating excavation/construction activities in the right-of-way. The right-of-way includes the street and all adjoining curbs, utility strips and sidewalks. These activities are coordinated by Engineering to minimize citizen inconvenience and taxpayer cost. If you observe excavations in the right-of-way that have not been restored for several weeks, call 258-3438.
Easement encroachment: Before you can build or otherwise encroach on any easement or right-of-way, you must receive legal authorization to do so from all concerned parties. That authorization must be filed with the Fayette County Clerk. Call 258-3410 for advice and assistance before work starts.
