Permits: A permit from the Division of Building Inspection is required before a structure may be built, moved, added to or structurally altered. Permits are also needed to install swimming pools, construct driveways or fences or do major remodeling of homes. Permits are also needed for: storage tanks, parking structures, canopies, grading, wrecking, signs, HVAC and electrical systems. To find out if you are required to obtain a permit, call 258-3770.
Demolition permits: A permit from Building Inspection is required before any structure may be wrecked, shored, razed or moved.
Underground utilities: Utilities should always be located before any digging is done. Call Kentucky Underground Protection at 1-800-752-6007 to notify most major utilities. Call Kentucky Utilities at 278-9355 and Kentucky American Water Co. at 268-6363 to notify those utilities.
Contractors: Any contractor who performs construction-related work is required to register each year with the city. Specialty contractors must also register if they perform work in Fayette County. To find out if the contractor you are considering is properly registered, call 258-3770.
Heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) permits: To get a permit for a new or replacement system, call 258-3770.
Yard sales: A permit is not required for a yard sale. Residents may have no more than two yard sales each year, each lasting no more than three consecutive days. Only one yard sale sign may be posted in the yard.
Sight distance complaints: Building Inspection responds to complaints involving fences, private signs, trees, bushes, or other types of plants that hinder visibility at public intersections.
