DIVISION OF
COMPUTER SERVICES
|
This division provides mainframe and microcomputer support, database development and
information services to divisions of the Urban County Government and some outside
agencies. About 1200 personal computers have access to a mainframe, internet,
electronic mail at over twenty (20) locations throughout Fayette County. Computer
Services has three components, mainframe and Information Technology (IT) and
Geographic Information Services (GIS).
In February of 1996, Information Technology began development of this Web Site and
three months later, it launched so that the people of Lexington and Fayette County
could find information about their local government online.
During the summer of 2001, Computer Services completely redesigned the site from
the ground up in order to keep up with current technology and to implement a more
user-friendly design. We are constantly
adding new content as well as working to keep the current information up to date and
welcome any comments or suggestions you may have that could make it better.
Mainframe
The staff of the Mainframe Department is comprised of Computer Analysts, Computer Operators, and Data Entry personnel. All these individuals work together to create programs, input data, and produce data output that enables the more than 1200 mainframe users of LFUCG to work efficiently on a daily basis. Payroll is balanced, checks are generated, the budget is produced, revenue is managed, and many other tasks are completed using the Mainframe system. We support many necessary functions within LFUCG by ensuring that data on the Mainframe is accurate, accessible, properly maintained and securely protected. Our analysts and operators update mainframe programs and customize reports daily, based on the needs of our users.
Information Technology
The Office of Information Technology staff of trained and experienced technicians are available to assist users in all areas related to personal computers and network resources. Our technicians build, repair, upgrade and maintain personal computers as well as the hardware and software required for the operation of the entire network environment (LAN/WAN) of LFUCG. We help increase productivity through our support of varied Information Management processes including Internet Access, Email, PC Programs, Printing, & Server Access (containing Home Directories and various databases). We are constantly monitoring and upgrading the network environment and peripheral equipment to better serve all areas of LFUCG.
Applications & GIS
The Applications & GIS staff is made up of four applications programmers, three GIS personnel, one Internet applications developer, and a third-party application specialist. They are responsible for developing and maintaining custom applications for LFUCG users, assisting in the selection, purchase, deployment and maintenance of third-party software solutions. They also maintain LFUCG’s presence on the Internet, and provide Mapping and Geographic Information services to LFUCG and the public at large.
