The LFUCG joined the voluntary KY Excellence in Environmental Leadership (KY EXCEL) program administered by the Kentucky Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet (EPPC) in November 2006. The goal of KY EXCEL is to improve the environment through voluntary environmental initiatives. The LFUCG joined at the Leader level, and was the first local government to join this program. As a Leader we committed to having an Environmental Management System in place, surveying our facilities for environmental compliance, and conducting at least three voluntary environmental projects annually (the results of which are reported to the EPPC). Although we are required to conduct only three environmental projects annually, in keeping with our commitment to be a leader, the LFUCG committed to conducting 17 environmental projects. One of the benefits of joining this program is that the LFUCG can now request and receive priority review for all EPPC approvals and authorizations (to include permit reviews from the Division of Waste Management, the Division of Air Quality, and the Division of Water).
