Located on a 687-acre campus near downtown Lexington, the University of Kentucky has an enrollment of 26,000 students
and is nationally recognized in more than 80 rankings of academic excellence. Founded in 1865 as the Agricultural and Mechanical
College, the school became the University of Kentucky in 1916. The blue-and-white school colors, Wildcat mascot and more
than 250,000 alumni represent the school’s academic, sports and civic excellence.
Founded in 1780, Transylvania University is the oldest college west of the Alleghenies, and the sixteenth-oldest college in the country.
Noted for its academic excellence, Transylvania enrolls more than 1,100 students, and more than 96% of the full-time faculty
holds a Ph.D. or the highest degree in their field.
Lexington is also home to Lexington Community College, as well as for-profit universities and colleges.
The Fayette County Public School system also boasts more than 55 elementary, middle and high schools. The district’s 2020
Vision project brings together a diverse group of community stakeholders to create a long-range plan for improving student
achievement. The first phase of the plan will roll out during this school year.
Fayette County is also home to more than 30 fine private schools, as well as several home school organizations. Lexington-Fayette
County is a community committed to educational excellence for its citizens, and the high academic standards lead to a better
quality of life for everyone involved.
