What is Destination 2040?
Destination 2040 is an inclusive community visioning project for Lexington-Fayette County, Kentucky. Read the Project Description presented to the Mayor and Council Members on October 30, 2007.
Who funds Destination 2040?
Destination 2040 is funded by Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. Most of the essential work of thinking together individually and in small groups about Lexington's future, however, is completed by volunteers.
Why does Lexington-Fayette County need Destination 2040?
Although several initiatives in the past 20 years have developed partial plans for some aspects of our community's future, we have no widely shared, widely supported vision that can guide our government, private sector, and charitable interests in moving our community from good to great. Mayor Jim Newberry and the 15 members of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council aim to address this gap by working together with the people of Lexington-Fayette County to develop a clearer sense of common purpose and direction.
What will Destination 2040 accomplish?
Destination 2040 will produce a vision report and implementation plans that will shape our community for at least the next 30 years.
What makes Destination 2040 different from standard government planning?
- First, this project is practical as well as visionary, and will tackle our community's biggest, most puzzling question head on: "How will we protect all that we value while continuing to grow as a community?"
- Second, Destination 2040's intensive commitment to engaging thousands of people from every part of Fayette County will produce fresh approaches, new energy, and the widespread support needed to craft a consciously chosen dream that will endure.
- Third, Destination 2040's sponsors, the Mayor and Council Members, are committed to take action based on the community's work during the project.
When is Destination 2040 taking place?
Public meetings will take place in two rounds in early 2008.
- Round One Meetings: January 24 – March 14, 2008: "The Destination Conversation: Many Ideas, One Vision"
- Round Two Meetings: March 31 – May 2, 2008: "Milestones and Measures: How Will We Mark Our Progress?"
Vision Report and Implementation Plans will be complete by July 1, 2008. Implementation will begin immediately, and will continue for the foreseeable future.
