Pursuant to the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000, as a local community, Lexington/Fayette County Urban Government (LFUCG) was required to develop a comprehensive All Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan. To help us be better prepared for a countywide natural disaster, it was important that our community develop a strategy to mitigate losses. The plan outlines areas at-risk in Lexington and determines vulnerabilities. The objective was to develop a program of activities to mitigate the community’s vulnerability to natural hazards.
Over the past year, DEEM partnered with the University of Louisville’s Center for Hazards Research to develop the local plan. A Steering Committee was formed consisting of over 30 local agencies and organizations to oversee the development of the plan. During this timeframe, the public was given opportunities to be involved in the process.
