DEEM offers several opportunities for businesses and residents to receive training and educational assistance. These include:

  • Community Emergency Response Team (CERT): The Division of Environmental and Emergency Management, along with the Division of Fire and Emergency Services, announces CERT as an exciting new training program that is open to the public. And best of all, it’s free!

The CERT program consists of 20 hours of training developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The training includes sessions on disaster preparedness, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, terrorism, disaster fire suppression, and disaster psychology and team organization. The training ends with a disaster simulation where team members get to practice the skills they’ve learned in the course.

  • Emergency planning and shelter surveys: DEEM offers free consultations and voluntary facility safety walk-throughs for businesses in Fayette County. Contact DEEM at 258-3784

  • Seminars and workshops: DEEM offers seminars and workshops on a variety of topics throughout the year at little or no cost.

  • Weather Spotters' Program: The Division of Environmental and Emergency Management (DEEM) hosts FREE weather spotter training classes. The next two weather spotter classes for 2008 are as follows:
    • Thursday, February 21, 2008
    • Thursday, March 20, 2008

The classes will be held in the Fire Training Center located at 1375 Old Frankfort Pike starting at 7:00 p.m.

By becoming a weather spotter you are performing a valuable service to the National Weather Service to report tornadoes, hail, strong winds and cloud formations. Weather spotters’ dedication and observations help provide other citizens with life saving information.

Classes are open to the public. To sign up for a class, or for more information, call Dion LeMieux at 231-5651.

  • Browse FEMA’s free online training website for more emergency preparedness training opportunities.
