Bike/Pedestrian Plans

Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan
The Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) adopted the Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan for Fayette and Jessamine County on August 22, 2007.

The plan presents a vision for making our region a better place to bicycle, walk and live. It is the result of a major planning effort that assessed each community’s bicycle and pedestrian needs, determined public desires and developed strategic goals, a long range improvement plan and a strategy for implementation.

Digital copies of the plan may be downloaded in PDF format by chapter or as one large document:

The plan proposes the creation of a more Balanced Transportation System through the development of Complete Streets and a Greenway Trail system.

  • ‘Complete Streets’ are designed with the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit users in mind as well as children, seniors and persons with disabilities. Complete street policies and projects have been identified and prioritized in the plan.

  • Greenway Trails were incorporated into the plan and priority trail corridors and projects have been established.

    Other plan themes include:

Ways in which bicycling and walking can contribute to more sustainable community development. The plan presents local development and design issues that should be addressed to create more walkable and bicycle-friendly neighborhoods.

Improving safety and security for bicyclists and pedestrians through public education and law enforcement.

Contributing to the economic vitality of our region by providing a quality of life that attracts and retains businesses and through bicycle tourism efforts.

Improving the overall quality of life in the region by achieving health and environmental goals and through encouraging and facilitating active lifestyles.

    Greenway Master Plan
In June 2002, the Greenway Master Plan was adopted by the Urban County Planning Commission. The plan offers recommendations for protecting vital stream corridors throughout the area and it proposes over 20 trails and improvements to existing bicycle facilities. It also endorses a rural road bike system. Download The Plan.
