Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control (LFACC) provides the city's animal care and control services on behalf of LFUCG through a contract agreement. We serve the community 365 days a year, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day (see contact information and full hour listing at the end of this section).
Local Ordinances and LFACC Services
Animal Licensing: All dogs and cats must be licensed annually starting at 6 months of age and rabies vaccinated at 4 months of age. Proof of rabies vaccination is required for the city license.
- License for an altered (spayed or neutered) dog or cat is $8.
- License for an unaltered dog or cat is $40.
- $25 of this fee goes directly into the LFUCG Spay & Neuter Fund.
- A license is good for 12 months from the date of issue; this includes any $5 license that was sold before June 10, 2005.
- Dogs and cats must wear their license and rabies tags at all times.
- Assistance dogs are exempt from annual licensing.
- Licenses may be purchased at participating veterinarian offices (visit www.lexingtonhumanesociety.org for a complete listing) or at the Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control office.
Leash Law: All dogs in Fayette County must be on a leash, behind a fence, or on the dog owners' property under the owners' supervision at all times when outside. Dogs cannot run-at-large, even under voice command, and they must wear their current license and rabies tags at all times. If you receive a summons or citation because your dog was running loose or not wearing its license/rabies tags, the fines can be paid at the Fayette County District Court.
There are 3 locations in Fayette County where dogs can run off-leash in designated areas: Masterson Station Park, Jacobson Park, and Coldstream Park.
Barking Dogs: To file an "Animal Nuisance" complaint, you must go in person to the Fayette County District Court.
Lost Pets: You must come to the LFACC office in person to look for your pet; we cannot identify your pet over the phone. When you pick up your pet, please have proof of current rabies vaccination and city license. If you do not have proof of rabies vaccination or license, you will need to purchase these in addition to any fines; we accept cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, or American Express.
Stray Dogs & Cats: All impounded stray dogs are held for a minimum of 5 days and cats for a minimum of 3 days in the hopes that their owners will reclaim them. If a dog is not reclaimed after 5 days and a cat after 3, it will become the property of the Lexington Humane Society and its medical condition and temperament will be evaluated for adoptability. No limit is set on the length of time that a dog or cat will remain available for adoption.
Pooper Scooper: The Pooper Scooper ordinance is handled by the Lexington Police Department.
Preventing Homeless Animals Initiative
LFACC plays a major role in the Lexington Humane Society's "Preventing Homeless Animals Initiative," which was implemented to reduce and prevent the number of homeless, unwanted, and abandoned animals in Fayette County. The Initiative includes:
- Updated animal ordinances creating incentive for pet spay/neuter:
- Differential license fees
- $8 for altered dogs/cats and $40 for unaltered dogs/cats; $25 goes directly into the LFUCG Spay & Neuter Fund
- Differential impound fees
- Higher impound fees for unaltered animals; the pet owner has the option to pay the unaltered fee or $50 for their pet's spay/neuter surgery at the Lexington Humane Society
- LFUCG Spay & Neuter Fund and Grant Program
- For no or low-income based spay/neuter cost assistance; self-funding through unaltered license and impound fees and private donations
- "Spay'sTheWay" low-cost spay/neuter program for qualified no or low-income Fayette County residents:
- 4 levels of cost assistance available depending on household income; 2 levels funded through the LFUCG Spay & Neuter Grant Program and 2 levels funded through the Lexington Humane Society; rabies vaccination and city license are provided with each spay/neuter surgery; for information call (859) 255-9033, Ext. 228
